What a welcome.

The River Parrett, overflowing onto Aller Moor. 03/05/2012

We drove the second batch of eggs back to the UK on Tuesday this week - a fairly painless 16 hour drive - but not particulalry helped by our car being in 'limp-home mode' with an electrical fault from about 2hrs in to the journey!

Came back from 28 degrees and unbroken sunshine to incredible sights in Somerset of unseasonal flooding of the floodplain - all of Aller Moor largely underwater, deep flooding on Curry Moor, West Sedgemoor partially submerged.  All a very trying time for farmers and ground nesting birds - but the cranes seem to be making the most of it, and feeding on worms and other invertebrates pushed up to the surface by the flood water.    We are regularly seeing 31 of the 33 birds - with 2 of the older birds 'somewhere else' at the moment... will try and track them down over the next few days.

Meanwhile the eggs have been hatching thick and fast and 18 of this year's eggs are now hatched with 6 eggs still to go... the team at WWT Slimbridge have their hands full!

This is amazing work that you are doing with these eggs here. I see so much coming from this for the future of the cranes. There needs to be more work like this in the future to increase the population. http://www.shellystapandgrill.com/

With a livable environment and hardworking experts, no doubt with it, the birds will surely have a good and healthy life. - Jeffrey Nimer
