Elizabeth Royal
Due to it being the Diamond Jubillee this year, it would have been rude not to have a Crane named after our fantastic monarch. The name suggested by Matthew Brierley, face of the RSPB, was Elizabeth Royal, and has stuck ever since. She has adapted well to life on the Somerset Levels and Moors, and is slowly beginning to integrate into the flock of adults.
Interestingly, out of the 19 juveniles of 2012, Liz's voice has been the first to begin to break, as she tries her very best to outdo the cheeping of the other chicks and over-bugle the adults, resulting in a sound rather like an angry goose. No doubt this will soon give way to the elegant undulating call of an adult crane, echoing across the moor, rather fitting in this special year.
