Character profile:
Summer 2010: Yellow Black Red was always small for her age, and quite a passive bird. She could be naughty and never liked going to bed. She was also not a big eater at Crane school and occupied a pretty low ranking in the pecking order. She really liked the water and spent a lot of time bathing. She is also Bart's sister. Sept 2010: Yellow-Black has formed an association with Clarence's cohort and is regulalry seen in a group with some or all of Clarence,Gemma, Michael,Wendy, Gilbert, Red-Black, Green-Black, Black-Yellow and Bart.
October 2010: Stilla quiet little bird who keeps herself to herself whilst remaining tightly within the super cohort.
Nov 2010: In recent weeks the cranes have all joined forces with Clarences group and are now usually moving as a group of 20. They have found new fields to explore and are often found foraging on maize stubbles, Yellow/Blacks new favourite food! She is becoming more friendly towards Bart as both seem to like staying in the centre of the group whilst foraging.
UPDATE:
Sadly, Yellow-Black-Red flew into powerlines on the afternoon of Thursday 18th November and was killed. We sincerely hope that this is a one–off situation, and will be continuing to monitor all the cranes closely. If they establish a regular route that puts them into close proximity to a particular set of power-lines, we will liaise with the relevant authority to request the fitting of markers onto the wires. Unfortunately on the continent injuries and deaths caused by collision with powerlines are not uncommon, accounting for around 60% of all recorded crane mortalities.
