A sad day for all at The Great Crane Project.

Peter on the Someset Levels, Autumn 2009.

On Saturday we heard the sad news that Peter Newbery, one of the founding members of The Great Crane Project, and a friend and inspiration to many of us had died.

Peter had a long career in nature conservation, starting work with the RSPB in the investigations team, before moving to reserves ecology and then becoming a regional officer in the former Thames Region.   He then joined species recovery at the RSPB’s head quarters and made a major contribution to some iconic projects: Cirl Bunting, Corncrake, Red Kite and most recently The Great Crane project.

Peter had been ill for some time, but remained positive and in high spirits.

He will forever be an essential and integral part of this project in the minds of all those involved in it, and will be sorely missed.    Our thoughts are with his friends and family at this sad time.
